Urban School for Outdoor Education

Urban School for Outdoor Education

An unbuilt school proposal for fifth- and sixth-grade students in Grand Rapids. The project considers outdoor education as part of the school environment, exploring a stronger connection between indoor learning spaces and the surroundings rather than treating the outside as a separate setting.

Architectural Story

The project begins with the relationship between inside and outside. Its design intention is to connect the school to its surrounding environment and encourage students to participate in that environment as part of their learning experience.

The related trail shelter and lookout develops this same interest at a smaller scale, extending the investigation from the school building into an outdoor setting.
